The books open to Jessica, 28-year-old freelance makeup artist struggling in New York City and trying to make a name for herself. Eavesdropping on one voicemail changes her whole life and turns into a nightmare she cannot wake up from.

Jessica sneaks into the study hosted by Dr. Lydia Shields to earn some quick money but gets caught up in the sinister mess that is Dr. Shields life. The study begins with simple questions about basic human morals and then turns into something that is a bit more personal than what Jess would like.

The most intriguing part of this story is the way it has been written. You see Jess’s side of the story on one page and then you see Dr. Shields narration of Jess’s behaviour or an interpretation of what Jess’s actions mean. It genuinely gives out the perfect stalker vibes and adds to the whole creepy experience that the authors want us to feel.

The story takes a new turn when Jess is asked to physically create scenes or seduce married men into cheating which not only riles up Jess but becomes a sadistic pleasure for Dr. Shields. In order to save her dying marriage, Dr. Shields goes out to lengths to protect the one she loves and causes more harm than any moral person would allow.

In this intense thriller, all laws are broken, all ethics disappear and all morality is lost which is ironic to the nature of the study that is conducted. One heck of a page-turner with powerful twists and strong cliff-hangers that makes you want to finish this book in one go.

A great book for those interested in a nail-biting experience of how a simple survey goes wrong, with a great stalker and an even greater game that is played throughout the book. An Anonymous Girl is a smart psychological thriller full of manipulations, lies, betrayal, and honesty which is perfect for you if you love an ingenious cat and mouse chase.

This is one book I had been looking forward to reading in 2019. Check out the other 2019 book I’m excited for here.
